How should it work?

Remove the enumeration option from the formatting file (since it's cumbersome to maintain/update) and put it in the Functions area in the mapping.

Ideally have the option like in Salsify to store/upload your enumeration mapping as a simple 2-column Excel file which should be possible to be used not only for CVL's but also for (Locale-)string fields.

When you have new enumerations values you simply update your uploaded Excel template in the mapping.

This would really ease the maintenance a lot compared how it need to be done today.

Why is it needed?

This would really ease the maintenance a lot compared how it need to be done today. And it would open up the possibilities for easy enumeration of string fields vs having to create a separate custom function to handle all of that.
