What impact would it make?

Less complex expressions, and in many cases possible to use expression instead of a custom built extension

How should it work?

As part of the expression, include a valiable on what type of events the expression will react upon. If should also be possible to have different expressions for different event types.
Ex. When a Product is created, set fieldset to OnboardingAccessories, based on the ProductType field value. When the same Product is updated and onboarding is complete, set FIeldset to Accessories.

In the example, the approach means that different fields can be shown for the two phased, which ensures that correct data is added for each phase.
